CHARLTON DOWN LOCAL HISTORY GROUP

Charlton Down Local History Group

At an Extraordinary General Meeting on November 29th 2017 it was agreed that Charlton Down Local History Group should be disbanded. This was because the attendances at meetings had declined over the past two years and it was not possible to find enough people willing to undertake the roles on the organising committee.

It was further agreed that the assets of the group should be used to purchase a bench within the village to commemorate the centenary of the ending of World War 1 in 2018 and to remember the sacrifice of local people during that time. The remaining assets will be donated to the Dorset County Museum to help in their fundraising for the extension they are building.

In the Course of Time

In 1992, to coincide with the closure of Herrison hospital, the then West Dorset Mental Health NHS Trust published a book entitled In the Course of Time, a History of Herrison Hospital and of Mental Health Care in Dorset. This book proved to be extremely popular and the copies printed soon sold out. The Charlton Down Local History Group (CDLHG) managed to obtain funding in order to have this book reprinted and copies of the book were available in the Village Shop.

We now have copies of a reprint of “In The Course of Time” and these are available for sale at £10.

Copies can be obtained from the Chairman Roy Chapman.
