No charge is made for the kitchen when used for preparing teas & coffees. The £10 charge is levied when heavy use, such as using the oven is required. Clients can book the use of the kitchen for preparation of light refreshments. This use does not constitute “Exclusive” use of the kitchen, except where the wedding package is being taken, as we only have one kitchen and other clients may wish to use it as well.

Rooms are let by the hour except for Weddings and Wedding Receptions. Booked time must include sufficient time to set up and clear away after the booking.

Charlton Down Village Hall does not charge VAT.


Bookings that benefit the community of Charlton Down or Charminster and are run as “not for profit” by volunteers will receive a discount of 33% and will be covered by our Public Liability Insurance. “For Profit” events and classes will not be eligible for a discount and they will have to demonstrate that they have their own Public Liability Insurance.

Children’s parties from any area may attract a 40% discount on their room hire charges.

Residents of Charlton Down or Charminster booking for a Private Function (except weddings and wedding receptions) may attract a 40% discount on their room hire charges.

Clients booking all rooms except for Weddings and Wedding Receptions, will qualify for a 15% off the total Room hire charges.

Facilities such as the sound system with microphones and music playing equipment, stage lighting and Audio Visual equipment which are included in the weddings packages, are priced differently for the various booking types. Please email bookings@charltondownvillagehall.info.


The Wedding Reception Package includes:-

  1. All rooms at Charlton Down Village Hall all day on the Saturday (or main event day) from 8.00am – 12.00 midnight.
  2. Use of Toad Hall for deliveries on the afternoon of the day before the event, and for storage of items to be collected on the morning of the first working day after the event.
  3. Two hours on the Sunday morning to finish clearing up and restoring the premises to the original state.)
  4. Facilities such as the sound system which includes microphones for the speeches and equipment for playing music during the reception is included.
  5. Client making a charge for alcoholic beverages will need to have a licence to sell alcoholic beverages. Charlton Down Village Hall has its own licence for the sale of alcohol and this is included.
  6. Stage lighting for a band (discotheques normally bring their own) is included.
  7. A damage Deposit of £150 will be charged and this will be banked and returned to the client in full if there is no damage. Clients should note that damage includes not returning the premises to the clean and tidy state in which they were handed over.
  8. All Weddings and Wedding Receptions are charged on the package basis and no discounts are available on these.

We are licensed to hold civil ceremonies every day of the week with or without a reception to follow.
If you decide to have a civil ceremony, you should first contact the Superintendent Registrar in Dorchester.
The Registrar will take a provisional booking up to twelve months in advance, although a confirmation must be made three months prior to your date.

Civil Marriage or Civil Partnership ceremony.
Ceremonies without a reception to follow have the use of the Ballroom, Toad Hall, Watts Room and the kitchen for a period of 3 hours. The charge for this is £250. The normal charge for facilities such as sound system £30), stage lighting (£30), and alcohol licence (£20) will apply.

Extra hours are charged at £50 per hour.
For clients wishing to take both the Wedding Reception package at £1,000 and the Civil Marriage or Civil Partnership ceremony and all they include, the price is £1,200 plus damage deposit etc. Clients are advised to read the Standard conditions of hire. No responsibility is accepted by the Hall Trustees for accidents or damage to persons or their property whilst on the premises. All accidents must be entered in the accident book in the kitchen.

A fully refundable damage deposit of £150 may applied to all bookings except for small children’s parties where a fully refundable deposit of £50 is applied. The deposit will be banked and returned to the client if the premises are undamaged and in good condition. The cheque for the refund may be collected after the event and will be made out in the name of the person who booked the event.

Public Liability Insurance.
The Village Hall has a Public Liability Insurance which covers clients. This is exhibited in the foyer of the Village Hall and all clients should check that they are sufficiently covered by this. Clients running classes “For Profit” should be covered by their own Public Liability Insurance.

Damage deposits must be paid at least 14 days before the event.
