The History Group have regular meetings throughout the year and meet in the Village Hall. Guest speakers are invited and talk on a wide range of fascinating local history topics usually with the aid of film slides. At the end of the evening some time is given for a question and answer period with the invited guest. We also arrange visits for members to interesting places around the county.

All meetings are held in the Herrison Hall at 7-30pm.

The membership fee for the 2015-16 session is £5 per person and the admission charge for members is £3 per meeting. New members can join at any of our meetings. Visitors are also welcome to attend any of our meetings at a cost of £3.

In the Course of Time

In 1992, to coincide with the closure of Herrison hospital, the then West Dorset Mental Health NHS Trust published a book entitled In the Course of Time, a History of Herrison Hospital and of Mental Health Care in Dorset. This book proved to be extremely popular and the copies printed soon sold out. The Charlton Down Local History Group (CDLHG) managed to obtain funding in order to have this book reprinted and copies of the book were available in the Village Shop.

We now have copies of a reprint of “In The Course of Time” and these are available for sale at £10.

I hope that they will soon be in the Village Shop, but in the meantime copies can be obtained from the Chairman Roy Chapman.
